"Absolutely amazing volunteers (Helen and David) plus Virginia. It's great to see David interact and gain my sons' trust. Helen is amazing with my daughter too and my daughter loves having them arrive every week. Don't stop."
The Doorstep Library Network endeavours to bring the joy of reading into the homes of families, living on council estates, through a team of volunteers who read books to the children and offer a lending library. Based in Hammersmith and Fulham, DLN makes weekly visits into the homes of society's more disadvantaged families, instilling the love of reading in children and improving their educational potential. Children (up to 11 yrs) benefit from the program and valuable relationships are fostered with their parents. The volunteers can then signpost the parents to local organisations and services that may be beneficial to them.
"There is no doubt that volunteering enriches my week. Having been with the project for 2 years I can see the progress in the children's reading levels and their enjoyment of books - as well as developing a warm, friendly relationship with the families. For a small weekly effort I am rewarded tenfold. It is a win win situation." Emily - Home-Reading Volunteer.
