The Doorstep Library Network is a charity instilling the love of reading in children and improving their educational potential through teams of volunteers reading stories on doorsteps and in homes on council estates. Children benefiting from individual reading sessions increasingly become keen readers and develop the self confidence to aim higher in their reading pursuits. In addition, valuable relationships are fostered with their parents enabling Doorstep Library to support them and facilitate access to additional services, while encouraging them to take an active role in their children’s education.
What it means to be a Doorstep Library Volunteer
"Absolutely amazing volunteers (Helen and David) plus Virginia. It's great to see David interact and gain my sons' trust. Helen is amazing with my daughter too and my daughter loves having them arrive every week. Don't stop."
"There is no doubt that volunteering enriches my week. Having been with the project for 2 years I can see the progress in the children's reading levels and their enjoyment of books - as well as developing a warm, friendly relationship with the families. For a small weekly effort I am rewarded tenfold. It is a win win situation." Emily - Home-Reading Volunteer.
