Doorstep Library are proud to launch our brand new volunteer film #WordsTakeYouPlaces, hot off the digital press! The film, which has been created for us by Director Michaela Lowe, aims to highlight the joy that being part of Doorstep Library can bring to children and their families and to the amazing people who volunteer with us.

The film was funded by the John Lyons Foundation and delivered in partnership with Media Trust. Out of hundreds of entries, we were one of 11 charities chosen to have a professional volunteer film made for them. The film portrays the journey of a family struggling with inter-generational literacy issues and the benefits that regular visits from Doorstep Library volunteers can bring. The story shows the wonderful relationship that develops between a young girl and a volunteer as they read together over the course of a year.

Our Director Michaela, was extremely passionate about the work we do and immersed herself in the Doorstep Library experience, attending an Information Session to find out about the volunteering process and going out to see our volunteers in action on a project. Her dedication and enthusiasm allowed her to write a story which truly reflects the benefits that our volunteers gain when they join our team.

To support the creation of the film she pulled together a fantastic crew of professional film makers and cast some wonderful actors to bring the story to life and give us a film which is both moving and inspiring. We were delighted to be able to join the actors and crew on set during filming and bring an insight into how the charity works.

The Doorstep Library volunteer film #WordsTakeYouPlaces has now been nominated for the Charity Film Awards, who celebrate the success of film in the charity sector to increase the exposure of charities and their good causes. We hope that through the awards more people will be inspired to join our team of volunteers, help us to raise vital funds and continue to visit even more children and families in disadvantaged areas.

The film reflects the kinds of wonderful experiences our team of over 100 volunteers have each day by bringing the magic of books and reading to children and families across London.
